METATRONEYES DIY RAW DIET

“ Can I has a bites? “ - MetatronEyes Lee Browning

It all started when...

We are people who love to research, especially when it comes to our animals’ welfare.

The moment we started breeding, we were determined to get the best kibble food there is for our fur-kids. Back then, the whole idea of “ Grain free “ or “ Low carb “ diet wasn’t really popular yet, so unfortunately we chose poorly.

Later on, grain free diets started to pop up like mushrooms at dog or cat exhibitions, seminars, and finally at pet shops. We were thrilled! Finally we thought we would be able to feed our cats (dogs too) the closest diet that would be natural to them. Basically, meat with no grains but in dry kibble form.

The switch from grain to grain free? Very very very stinky explosions - it just seemed like their organism couldn’t handle this type of food. We switched them as gradually as possible and in the end they accepted it and all was well.

In both diets though, from time to time they would always have a digestive issue - not always, but when they did, boiled chicken with rice was in order.

Mid 2013, we discovered at an exhibition a new kind of diet! The B.A.R.F diet! (Biological Appropriate Raw Food)

To make a long story short, we decided to try this as it sounded heavenly for our babies!

And so we ordered our very first B.A.R.F bulk order. Some cats ate it some didn’t - it took some time for the transformation. Many times though our cats would be constipated or have loose stool and throw up, a lot. We tried a different B.A.R.F recipe - again problems. Their coat wasn’t shiny anymore, they would be sick and that was a red flag for us.

So we stopped ordering from this company and were looking for different companies. (There aren’t many in Greece at all)

So what we did, we continued the high quality grain free dry kibble and simply got some fresh meat from the butcher and fed it to them in the evenings. It worked much better than when we were on only dry or only on B.A.R.F.

However, a week or so after we stopped ordering from this company, it was time for our cats’ yearly health check up (HCM, PKD screening, HD x-rays and blood panel testing)

We have never ever had such bad and shocking blood test results! And of course we were not sure why, but from then on we started testing our cats every time we changed the diet - because it was obvious to us that it was because of the B.A.R.F transformation.

Though to not accuse all B.A.R.F companies or the idea of B.A.R.F - this would not be fair at all as there are (based on our intense research afterwards) exceptionally high quality companies in USA specifically, but in Greece the companies who prepare it and sell it, we realized that they were just trying to sell this new idea. (No wonder our cats didn’t want to eat it anymore and were sick)

How could a B.A.R.F bulk order be so cheap if they used high quality meat? And furthermore, why didn’t they write where the meat came from? But the absolute worst? They don’t have the knowledge to prepare this kind of diet. It is a huge responsibility and they risk lives by feeding incorrect percentages of bone and liver as an example.

So anyway! Now, we have dedicated months to our research before making the important switch! We started the DIY (Do It Yourself) diet! Which means, that we prepare it on our own and only on our own in Greece as well as in USA.

Does it take time to understand everything? Yes it does. Making sure that all cats agree with each protein and if not, making sure to look out for any allergy signs and then find the right protein for this cat. Supplementation or not? How much bone content, how much heart percentage? Liver? How much to feed per cats’ weight? It is a lot of dedication and we applaud every breeder or pet owner out there who chooses to feed their cats this diet in a responsible and educated way.

Results?

  • Shiny silky coat
  • Healthy gums with white teeth
  • If you walked by their litter boxes you wouldn’t know there was something in it
  • More water intake
  • Cat is happier and more energetic - yet not hyper
  •  No digestive problems
  •  More muscles and healthier overall.

That is, if done right. If not, then yes, they will have problems. This is why it is important to do your research before trying it.
Also, what about hygiene? Well, what happens to you when you cut raw meat for your dinner?
You have to be careful, yes. You have to clean every surface, even your cat’s paw in case it stepped on raw and etc. You just have to disinfect, as simple as that.

We could go on and on about it, but there are thousands of sources (that we will link for you below) on the Internet that can explain everything better than we can. It is quite interesting honestly and we encourage everyone to research it before judging.

Sometimes speaking about raw, is like speaking about politics or religion, so excuse our long explanation that could point out a slight sign of defensiveness. We do not judge anyone who doesn’t feed raw. To each their own and this is why we raise our kittens on dry kibble, wet food and raw, because many of their new families don’t agree with raw.

However! The most important point out of all this  is:

A poor quality type of kibble (would rather recommend poor quality wet food)is less dangerous than a poor irresponsibly made B.A.R.F or DIY raw diet.

So please please do your research before doing basically what we did. We learn from our mistakes and try to warn people to not do the same.

If you have any questions regarding the Raw diet, we would be happy to answer them and help you!

Some of our gourmet meals

Disclaimer : The meals of course are raw meals meant for our Maine Coons. That also means, that there might be disturbing pictures of certain meats or an animal's body part. We do not intend to gross out anyone (we admit, it took some getting used to for us even when preparing all the meals), but we would really like to present it in a half comical way (since we don't have the time to decorate their plates like this haha) in order to show people that a raw diet might be icky yet is an absolutely normal looking diet for your cat.
We will try to explain the nutrition of each ingredient we add to their plates. Also, the dishes presented are either their breakfast or dinner - which means that they are not fully balanced with all necessary ingredients.

Again, our apologies in case we burnt some eyeballs haha.

To the lovers of raw diet: we hope you enjoy! In case you have anything to add or inform us with, it would be very much appreciated since we are still learning!
